The Bible teaches that the only way to become an heir of God's Kingdom is through faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and by being born again through the Holy Spirit. The following key steps, rooted in God's Word, offer a guide for becoming an heir of His Kingdom.
Step 1: Recognize Your Need for Salvation
The first step to becoming an heir of God's Kingdom is recognizing that, without Christ, all people are separated from God because of sin. The Bible teaches that everyone has sinned and fallen short of God's glory (Romans 3:23). Sin creates a barrier between us and God, and without reconciliation, we cannot inherit the blessings of His Kingdom.
Step 2: Believe in Jesus Christ
The heart of the Gospel is that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to earth to live a perfect life, die on the cross for our sins, and rise again on the third day. Through His death and resurrection, He offers forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and eternal life to all who believe in Him.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)
Believing in Jesus means acknowledging Him as your Savior (who saves you from sin and death) and as your Lord (to whom you submit your life and will). This faith is not merely intellectual acknowledgment but trust in His work on the cross and His promises.
Step 3: Repent of Your Sins
Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God. It’s a change of heart and mind that leads to a change in behavior. Repentance is a necessary step in following Jesus because it demonstrates the desire to be restored to a right relationship with God.
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17)
Repentance involves both sorrow for your sin and a decision to turn from sinful behaviors and attitudes, allowing God to transform your life.
Step 4: Be Born Again by the Holy Spirit
Becoming an heir of God's Kingdom involves a spiritual rebirth. Jesus explained to Nicodemus that to enter the Kingdom of God, a person must be "born again" — born of the Spirit. This is a work of God, where He gives you a new heart and a new spirit through the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit works in the believer’s heart, granting new desires to live for God, empowering them to live a life that honors God, and sealing them as God’s own possession (Ephesians 1:13-14).
Step 5: Follow Jesus and Obey His Commands
Once you have placed your faith in Jesus and been born again, you are called to follow Him and obey His commands. Jesus Himself emphasized that those who love Him will keep His commandments, and living in obedience to Christ is a sign of being truly His disciple.
Being an heir is not just about receiving an inheritance; it’s also about living as a child of God, reflecting His love and righteousness in the world. This involves growing in your relationship with God, learning from His Word, praying, and sharing the love of Christ with others.
Step 6: Join the Family of Believers (The Church)
As an heir of God's Kingdom, you are not alone in your faith journey. You are part of the larger family of believers, the Church. It’s essential to be involved in a local church community where you can grow spiritually, worship God together, receive teaching, and support one another in your walk with Christ.
The Church provides fellowship, accountability, and the opportunity to serve others as you grow in your relationship with God.
Step 7: Live with the Hope of Eternal Life
Finally, as an heir of God’s Kingdom, you are called to live with the hope of eternal life. The inheritance that is promised to you is not just for this life, but for the one to come — a new heaven and a new earth, where God will dwell with His people forever. This hope shapes how you live today, motivating you to persevere in faith, endure trials, and live out God’s love in the world.
Our desire is that these scriptures will help deepen your understanding and draw you closer to becoming a part of God's family, inheriting His Kingdom as His child and co-heir with Christ. This transformation is not by your own effort but by the grace of God, through faith in Jesus Christ.
